Sheriff
Sheriff Jay began his law enforcement career at the Weatherford, OK police department in 1988. From there, he was called as the Chief of Police for the Town of Cheyenne for a short time until he resigned to care for his grandfather. Sheriff Jay was employed in 1994 with the Beckham County Sheriff’s Office as a jailer/dispatcher until 1997 when he was assigned to the field as a road deputy. In 2000, Sheriff Jay saw the need for a new direction within the Sheriff’s Office and was encouraged to place his name on the ballot as a candidate for the office of Sheriff. Sheriff Jay won the election in 2000 and took the oath of office on January 2, 2001.
Sheriff Jay is now in his third term as Sheriff and takes on a progressive, pro-active approach to law enforcement. Sheriff Jay believes the primary purpose or mission of the Beckham County Sheriff’s Office is to maintain social order within prescribed ethical and constitutional limits, while providing professional law enforcement services.
